The Journal of Information Architecture is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, published by the REG-iA (Research and Education Group in Information Architecture), an IAI (Information Architecture Institute) international volunteer initiative.

Initiated in January 2008, it currently comprises academics from Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Poland and Norway. The basic premise behind the group is that although IA is a well-established profession and a thriving community of practice, it is not yet a fully recognized academic discipline and it is not, with a few notable exceptions, an acknowledged course of study in most of the world.

In keeping with this premise, the journal was first presented during the 10th annual IA Summit! in Mephis and  the first issue is now available online to the general public. Each subsequent current issue will be accessible first to
Information Architecture Institute members, while the archives will then be available to everyone. The journal is published biannually in English

Information architecture (IA) has gradually gained prominence over the last few years.  Currently on Google there are over 2 million items containing the phrase “Information Architecture”. The Institute of  Information Architecture defines IA as the art and science of organizing and classifying websites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability and findability.

Information architecture draws on many fields, including library science, computer science, social informatics, information design, visual design, and engineering psychology (Morrogh, 2003, p. 5).

The main focus of the new Journal of Information Architecture is  to create a forum with the specific purpose of developing the field of information architecture, of adding to the body of knowledge about information architecture, developing concepts for information architecture, and address the theoretical foundations of information architecture.

The editors place a particular emphasis on “scientific”, a scientific journal being  critically different from other kinds of statements or claims, made in say blogs or  discussion lists. “Science is more that just another opinion”, she continues.

The journal aims to bring together not just scholarly research but also “Voices from the field” or rather the collective knowledge of the community of practice. Thus, the journal is an opportunity for practitioners to systematize and reflect on their practice, practical knowledge and the principles that guide their work.

This inaugural issue reflects the breadth of different information architecture issues and approaches.
This first issue is freely available to the general public. Each subsequent current issue will be accessible first to Information Architecture Institute members, while the archives will then be available to everyone.

The Call for Papers for the Autumn 2009 issue, Issue 2, Volume 1, is now open and available at journalofia.org/cfp
In keeping with the dual scope of the journal  authors are asked to indicate whether they submit their paper to academic peer review or to professional peer review.
