"Webology" (ISSN 1735-188X) is an international peer-reviewed open access journal in English devoted to the field of the World Wide Web. A particular focus is given to information dissemination and communicating processes as well as the social and cultural implications of the web.

"Webology" was founded in 2004, and is published quarterly. The place of publication is Iran, the publisher is the University of Teheran, Department of Library and Information Science, and the chief and associate editors are also Iranian (Persian), namely Dr. Alireza Noruzi and Dr. Hamid R. Jamali. Both editors, however, have a vast international curriculum that can be read in their personal profiles, and the other members of the editorial team are from countries spread around the world: Australia, Canada, South-Africa, US, China, France, etc. The international connotation of the journal is also manifest in its very nature, i.e., an online journal documenting web related topics, but also it its content.

The journal is widely indexed and abstracted and the copyright of articles submitted to the journal are published under the terms of the Creative Commons License.

Since its inception "Webology" has spanned a wide variety of topics and interests. There is a strong emphasis on new information technologies and methodologies. The orientation is toward quantitative experimental work, but significant qualitative and historical research is also sought. Topics covered to date range from Digital libraries, Libraries and the Web, Information transferring, Information seeking behavior, Social and cultural simpacts of information, Information marketing, Management information systems (MIS), Informetrics, Scientometrics, Bibliometrics, Citation analysis to Semantic Web, Web ontology, Web Thesaurus, Webometrics, Web Intelligence (WI), Web mining, Web users and usage studies, Intellectual freedom on the Web, Web site filtering, Open Access, Knowledge management and much more.

Special topic issues are also often seen. The latest issue of "Webology" is guest edited by Louise Spiteri at the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University, Canada. This entire issue is devoted to Folksonomy. From the editorial:
«The papers in this special issue reflect the diversity of approaches taken to create Web resources that reflect better the needs of end users. Particular emphasis is placed on the need to manage the increasing volumes of tags and information available on the Web, particularly as more people are becoming engaged with numerous social applications. As is discussed in some of the papers in this special edition, there is certainly scope to consider ways in which to combine the more traditional controlled vocabularies with the free-flowing nature of tagging».
Peters and Weller, in their article, suggest introducing a tag garden that matches synonyms together to provide some additional structure, other than tag clouds or tags-user-document co-occurences, to improve accessibility:

Some recent articles in previous issues have included the following:
As can be seen the range is vast, covering topical issues by authors from all over the globe. "Webology"’s public is also worldwide as can be seen from exit statistics to the site, interestingly with most vistis from Singapore, the US, the Russian Federation and Germany:

Book reviews are another feature offered by the journal. Not only are these a good source of information about recently published books, but are also a way for today’s librarians to stay current in their particolar areas of specialisation or learn about unfamiliar areas.

It is possibile to sign up for e-mail alerts. However, given the large number of e-mails we often receive and in order to reduce our e-carbon print, perhaps an RSS would be more recommendable.

"Webology" lends voice to many different perspectives and gives coverage to topics that may be difficult if not imposible to find elsewhere and is without doubt a welcome contribution to the world of library and information science.

A call for papers for Volume 5, Number 4, "The World Wide Web"
and "Library and Information Science", has now been issued and the deadline is December 15, 2008. E-mail address for paper submission: nouruzi@gmail.com. Alternative e-mail address for submission: webology@gmail.com
