Abstract

The National Research Council of Italy, precisely the Institute for Atmospheric Pollution Research (CNR-IIA) is carrying out, on behalf of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, a research for the identification, collection, georeferencing and dissemination of the places involved in World War I along the Italian front line by means of a Geographic Information System (GIS). According to the different used sources names of cities, villages, mountains, etc. are written in several different ways, due to the different and frequent transcription and variation of the original names. The various versions and the available translations has been collected and stored. This part of the work was not only a mandatory element in order to identify locations on a map and to perform queries, but represents also an added value since it allows the identification of places using all the
available linguistic versions using an online GIS.
