Manuscripts in the Digital Age
Leveraging LOD and IIIF to link images and text: a case study from the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana

This article explores the use of Linked Open Data (LOD) and International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) standard to link images and text, thus making one of the Library’s fundamental manuscripts, De educandis ingeniis by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, accessible in an enhanced digital format. The project entailed the digitization of the manuscript, automatic transcription via Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) using Transkribus and semantic encoding in TEI XML and ALTO formats. A prototype developed on the Simple Annotation Server (SAS) integrates annotations, enabling an interactive engagement with the manuscript. The research outlines a replicable workflow aimed at enhancing accessibility, interoperability, usability and digital preservation. By addressing the lack of unified methodologies in the field, this work contributes to the broader discourse on digital philology and the sustainable integration of cultural heritage into the Semantic Web.Riferimenti bibliografici
